Eating Disorder Services
Eating disorders are a complex mental illness which have a profound impact on individuals psychological, social, medical and economic well-being. Influenced by a range of factors including neurobiology, early learning experiences, psychological traits and social influences such as diet culture and weight stigma, eating disorders can take hold of people’s lives.
Characterised by restrictive eating behaviours, attempts to compensate for nutritional intake, binge eating, poor body image, and significant distress eating disorders have more in common across the diagnostic spectrum than differences. While diagnoses of Anorexia, Bulimia, ARFID and Binge Eating Disorder may fit for some people, many individuals with serious illness fit in to a broader category of OSFED (Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder).
Disordered eating of any kind can have a serious impact on an individual’s emotional and physical well-being, and those suffering often report higher levels of anxiety, depression, guilt, shame, and self-loathing. These emotions, coupled with uncertainty about change, can make it very difficult to ask for help.
Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, and specialised eating disorder therapy is a proven method for supporting recovery. While early intervention leads to better outcomes, treatment is possible at any stage, and recovery is always within reach.
A multi-disciplinary approach is essential for effective, evidence-based eating disorder treatment.
This typically includes:
✔ Carer Eating Disorder Support to help families and loved ones navigate the recovery process.
✔ An eating disorder-credentialed mental health clinician (psychologist, social worker, or occupational therapist) experienced in treating Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, OSFED, and ARFID.
✔ A GP with expertise in eating disorders, ensuring medical monitoring and comprehensive care.
✔ A dietitian specialising in eating disorders, supporting nutritional rehabilitation and recovery-focused meal planning.
